Australia. Broadbill Swordfish from the shore. A world first?

  • I've attached a clipping from a New South Wales (Australia) newspaper - unfortunately its rather poor quality - that reports the recent capture of a Swordfish from the shore. The 'baby', that’s all it was, was 1.21 cm long and weighed 3.9kgs.

In parts of Australia, with access to deep water from cliffs, a select group of anglers have, drifting baits out, caught Marlin. And I've also heard of small Black Marlin being taken by fly anglers fishing inshore in very shallow water, but this is the first Swordfish I've ever heard of taken from the shore. How about you? Has anyone heard of such a capture before?

  • Hi Dave,

what a very interesting thread! Two weeks ago we talked with robert over fishing from shore. At the canaries (Fuerteventura) I met a fishermen who fished with a kite from shore and caught a lot of fish. His most amazing catch was a small Mako with a kite from shore.

Some of these specialized guys (they are really good fishermen) fish with a helium baloon from the shore. Of course it is only possible if the landbased wind comes from behind. But they are really successful.

I would be very interested to learn more about shore-based fishing for pelagic fish. Have you ever heard from the shore-fishing at the sceleton coast at Namibia? They catch HUUUUGE Sharks there.

But I never heard about catching a Swordfish from shore. But it´s very interesting and of course it is possible.

Come on guys, who can tell us more about? I know there are a lot of specialists here. Talk with us!

    Best wishes,
    Uwe

They do get big Bronze Whalers in Namibia. But South Africa also produces numbers of shore caught sharks. I recall, in years gone by, they used to catch numbers of large Great Whites. Although not quite in that league they are occasionally encountered from the shore as post 63 on this thread - http://www.worldseafishing.com…hread.php?t=175990&page=7 - illustrates
