ROD FISHING CLUB, JANUARY 13th, 2007: the first "espadon" (xiphias gladius) caught in game fish in Rodrigues with Yann Colas and his famous boat Black Marlin.
Hello everybody,
Yann always wants to improve service and technics for his customers. Thoses last times, he got interest in the technics used especially in New Zeland, to catch swordfish
Thoses methods, associated to his know how and the fact that he was sure to find Xiphias around Rodrigues, pushed him to try this specific fishing.
During the last fishing season, Yann tried 4 times and each time ... sharks! All the conditions were therefore not present (spots, moon, current, wind, etc...)
January 12th at night: The team of the "strong men" counting Daniel Bodin, Raphaël Cleyet-Mollard and Alain Grand, comes back happy from their "Eastern High Reef". Yann asks them if they want to try to catch swordfish the day after. Because if they are really sympathetic, motivated and lucky, all the weather and current conditions are present.
January 13th; 9.30 PM: Yann finds a spot that he "smells" good. The boat is drifting slowly with two lines provided with calmar at different depths. 30 minutes waiting before the special touch, followed by a beautiful rush. The fight is lead with master's hand by Daniel Bodin, encouraged by his friends. 35 minutes after, it's the reward: the first Xiphias Gladius caught in game fish in Rodrigues is hoisted up aboard the Black Marlin. What a great atmosphere!
Everybody sings the Marseillaise playing especially for him!
Maybe this super fishing team gave a hand to the destiny. They were very lucky during their 5 days fishing trip: a black marlin of 235 kg (new club record), 3 smaller with one tagged and released, 2 doggies of 63 kg and 62.5 kg and almost all the spieces you can find in Rodrigues except sailfish (a good reason to come back next year...!) and also this fantastic swordfish of 73 kg.
Yann will perfect his technic and test other spots for those who would like to fish in Rodrigues with him. If the next tries confirm this result, the anglers wil be able, according to the weather conditions, to spend a night fishing Xiphias between trolling and jigging. This really is "multi fishing"!
Usual reserves: In order to practice this kind of fishing, the weather conditions will be even more important than for jigging (quite weather)... Therefore, it is not done in Rodrigues!...
In our opinion, this option will be taken only once there, but isn't it up to the angler to adapt to the weather conditions?
NB: Our reaserch in order the fish adapts to the angler did not succeed yet!
Tropical wishes
Alain COLAS
