Here's a report from James Bishop, one of our Club members:
ZitatAlles anzeigenI've just returned from a fantastic trip to Canada, which ended on a high with a day out on the water chasing sturgeon on the Fraser river in BC.
The day started well with a couple of sturgeon around the 40lb mark, but the low levels and high water temps had made the fish a bit lethargic and for the rest of the day we struggled to get another hookup due to the extremely finicky takes. After half a dozen or so missed half-takes and five or six moves, with an hour or so to go we found a cracking spot on a dropoff from 12 to 25 feet in amongst some monster snags. Within fifteen minutes I had hooked a bit of a monster, which gave me a real battle for 30 mins or so coming clear of the water five or six times. We eventually got it into the shallows for measurement and photos and I was a very happy angler with a sturgeon estimated at 210lb. With enough time left to position the boat back on the spot, I managed another smaller fish of around 40lb, before the rod hooped over again and I had another proper sturgeon steaming off downstream. It proved to be a bit of a brutal battle with me having to pile on the pressure to keep it out of the snags. With the wind picking up, my guide Rod couldn't back down on the fish fast enough and we ended up having to swing the boat round and chase it down stream front-on with me hanging over the side.....it certainly got the heart pumping!
After subduing it and getting it into the shallows we were able to appreciate an even bigger fish estimated at 250lb. It was an extremely impressive fish to see up close and a fantastic way to end the day and the trip.
All in all, a fantastic experience out on the mighty Fraser. Thanks again for the recommendation of getting in touch with Steve Kaye - Steve and my guide Rod were excellent and Rod worked extremely hard all day to put me onto those two monster sturgeon. Pretty awesome to think that there are fish in that river four times the size of those fish....hopefully I will get a chance to go back at some point to try and find them!
