Rancho Leonero Resort, East Cape BCS, MexicoA report right from the source: The week of Sept. 6-13, 2014The Environment:Hurricane Norbert caused a lot of disruption, but also it really switched the fishing on. Before the storm, the water temps had stagnated at around 90 degrees. The storm dropped them to the 70s and they have slowly returned to the mid-80s.However, as this report is being written, Hurricane Odile is thundering toward the tip of Baja with expected landfall later Sunday night. The Bottom Line:[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IxBDvdz23Rw/VBXLjiCo12I/AAAAAAAAaQQ/VOK619sBJc4/w600-h422-no/09.13.14.marlin.jpg]This was a “Shopping List” week. Billfish – All the species are around and biting well, with sailfish probably the most predominant.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-b6kz2tytadA/VBXL8hSSR0I/AAAAAAAAaQ4/PjLeQUWBUiI/w600-h465-no/09.13.14tuna.jpg]Yellowfin Tuna – The bite south of Los Frailes continues strong. These are good-sized fish from footballs to 80-pounders.Dorado – Good bite all around the Lighthouse and scattered throughout the bay. Seek and ye shall find! The week of Aug. 16-23, 2014

    The Environment:

All-in-all it’s been a rainy summer and today (8/23) we’ve been seeing heavy storm clouds over the sea to the southeast. Thunder can be heard so we expect a little rain with a nice cool day. This overcast weather has cooled things down this week. The sea surface temps were also a little cooler: 85.3 degrees yesterday.

    The Bottom Line:

The water has been flat calm seas all week. Good bait available including caballito and barracuda. Sardina were available down south on the way to the tuna bite.

Let’s call it an improving 7.5 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

Billfish – Sailfish are the most plentiful at the moment. Best area proved to be 5- to 10-miles off Cabo Pulmo. Most success was on lures with trolled ballyhoo a close second. Some blues were also taken on jigs. The stripers have gone quiet which is usual this time of year. We did, however, have a boat catch two yesterday.

    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0Kvqzo4badw/U_p2IJCjv1I/AAAAAAAAZHY/DrA5eDsI104/w600-h450-no/08.23.14.tuna.jpg]
Yellowfin Tuna – The tuna bite down south, just past Los Frailes, continues to produce fish. They are biting exclusively on sardinas. Dead or alive the sardinas are what they want. These are good fish, 25- to 45-pounds. Anglers can expect 4 to 8 fish per day. Kind of slow, but patience does pay off. There are schools of porpoise holding fish outside, but they have proved to be picky biters.

Dorado – Dorado are spread all over. Boats are finding schools all over the East Cape and picking out the bigger fish and releasing the small ones. Some better quality dodos were taken in amongst the tuna.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …

    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-LxRHpV8VCR0/U_p2flaMxPI/AAAAAAAAZIA/EMLVwba_jnw/w600-h385-no/08.23.14.rooster.jpg]

A few more roosters showed up this week. Some really big fish (60-pounders) were nailed near the new marina entrance. Some huge pargo in the 40-pound range were taken in front of actor Scott Glenn’s house, between the Ranch and La Ribera.

    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p-7Hd-PH9R4/U_p29zYgpDI/AAAAAAAAZIo/nUm0dkP5TmQ/w450-h600-no/08.23.14.pargo.jpg]
Big pargo are lurking in the tree stumps and reefs. It’s tough to get them out, but fun trying. Dropping down a big live bait is working is best. Then it's just a tug-o-war!

    The week of August 3, 2014 - August 10, 2014

    The Environment:

Not much different than last week … another week of hot summer days with warm water, excellent fishing and pleasant afternoons where you can enjoy a cool one around the pool.

Bisbee Tournament dominated the week. It was won by a 323-pound blue marlin. Stats should be out from the organizers today.

Water – The water temps are still right around 87-degrees.

Air – Hot! in the mid-90s with nice midday breezes.
    .
    The Bottom Line:

Bait guys are doing a great job with caballitos and bait boats were making sardina right in front of Leonero this week. Not small, but they are working for tuna.

    All-In-All: A solid 8.5+ on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

Billfish – The tournament stats will tell a better story but there were blues and stripers caught all week. The sailfish right now outnumber the stripers which is normal in the warmer water.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kGZP7feh2yg/U-lUVY60T8I/AAAAAAAAYhU/hOgZn9Uk8bc/w455-h607-no/08.10.14.tuna.jpg]
Yellowfin Tuna – The tuna hole south of Los Frailes is still producing a large number of fish ... the average was bigger over 40 pounds. Sardina, dead or alive were working best for the tuna with a few caught on caballitos.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YjYpvewP7W4/U-lUxVYU9dI/AAAAAAAAYh8/7N88jkVYQDQ/w543-h607-no/08.10.14.dorado.jpg]
Dorado – There were some 30- to 40-pound dorado taken in with the tuna and there have been schoolies all over the East Cape.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c0Eoqjpm-ZA/U-lVFYL0LVI/AAAAAAAAYik/wQ2QmXge3g0/w455-h607-no/08.10.14.grouper.jpg]
Inshore fishing? Still the same culprits hanging on: Pargo and amberjack. The roosterfish bite has slowed. I think this is because of the warmer water, but don't despair! September and October are normally excellent roosterfish months!

    The week of July 26, 2014 - Aug. 2, 2014

    The Environment:

Let’s not forget that its summer and summer in Baja is hot! We’re up around 95 degrees, but seas are flat and light midday breezes help to cool things down. Sea temps are around 88 degrees.

    The Bottom Line:

With a good supply of very good bait available, fishing has been equally good. We’re getting caballitos and a few more sardinas … mostly down south where the tuna are.

    All-in-all: A solid 8.5 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jxqJQITK85Y/U95yoqtmlaI/AAAAAAAAYKA/TdU6EdeS3GM/w600-h369-no/08.03.14.blue.jpg]

Billfish – The blue marlin bite continues. This is Bisbee Tournament week and we’re hoping for some big fish. Most fish were taken off La Ribera this week. On the other side of the coin, the striped marlin bite has slowed considerably. Consensus of opinion: the water is a bit warm. Sailfish, however, have filled in the void. This is pretty normal for this time of year.

Yellowfin Tuna – The bite inshore just south of Los Frailes continues to produce quality fish with 40- to 50-pounders all week. Last week, they were only eating sardinas. This week they have been hitting soaked caballitos as well. Some were even taken on squid.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7zR25XcWHXA/U95y4_IACzI/AAAAAAAAYKg/8fLfIb5gYbU/w600-h449-no/08.03.14.dorado.jpg]
Dorado – Lots of smaller schoolies all over the East Cape with some of the bigger fish out on the troll.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-O3jtmufQZzU/U95zK9H0kuI/AAAAAAAAYLI/WT0rrLJSHZw/w600-h459-no/08.03.14.amberjack..jpg
Rooster fishing was slow this week. It seems those grandes have moved out for a while. On the bright side, there is good-to-excellent pargo and amberjack fishing along with some pompano on the local reefs.

Rancho Leonero Resort, East Cape BCS, MexicoA report right from the source: The week of July 19-26, 2014The Environment:We are deep into a hot summer and, like every other Baja summer, the days can be really warm now. Fortunately, the afternoon breezes keep things a little more comfortable. Water – The water temps are right around 87 degrees. Air – Just like our fishing … very hot!The Bottom Line:Good bait is available thanks to our new bait guys who are doing a great job. Unfortunately, sardina still remain scarce which mattered little until the tuna would eat nothing else. Some bait boats have sardina in small numbers, but are tough to get. All-In-All: A solid 8.5 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zjHnA_tFBww/U9Kn5i3eeyI/AAAAAAAAXnk/XjDyRl1auQs/w600-h448-no/bluedawg.jpg]Billfish – The blue marlin bite continues to lead the billfish news. Rancho boats found good fish all week in most areas. Fish were caught outside as well as close to shore from Cerralvo to Los Frailes. Striped marlin are around in moderate numbers and sails are plentiful. Blues all were caught on lures while stripers and sails split between ballyhoo and caballitos.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ueteFD7hW4k/U9Up8UyQ5ZI/AAAAAAAAXyM/xr4MwCaB8d0/w600-h457-no/07.27.14.tuna.jpg]Yellowfin Tuna – Good fish all week with the biggest weighing in at 70-pounds. The free-swimming school down at Los Frailes was producing fish of about 40-pounds all week. Chumming and soaking sardinas was the only successful way. Some boats chose to go outside and scout for porpoise, which proved very successful. Fish from 30- to 70-pounds were taken in good numbers; all on hoochies and cedar plugs. Dorado – The fish appeared to be slightly bigger this week, 10- to 20-pounders with a few whoppers out in the open water. Again, the fish are spread all over the East Cape with no specific hot spot.Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch … [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5ugzdttZsbY/U9UpbC9iJ8I/AAAAAAAAXxk/bJr4BIaDWtk/w600-h500-no/07.27.14.jack.jpg]Inshore fishing continued to provide a true bouillabaisse of pargo, amberjacks, jack cravelle and roosterfish. Additionally, some boats also picked off wahoo, with the biggest right around 50-pounds

Rancho Leonero Resort, East Cape BCS, MexicoA report right from the source: The week of July 13 - July 20 - 2014The Environment:Clean, clear water.Water – 85 degrees inside, 86 to 88 degrees outside.Air – Days have been hot.The Bottom Line:Bait availability has been excellent with all boats getting good caballito and ballyhoo. We have come to the end of a week of excellent fishing conditions. No more rain nor is it overcast. The fishing itself started picking up nicely at the beginning of the week; call it an 8.5 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.Billfish – The blue marlin returned this week with fish being caught every day close off Buena Vista to the Light House from 3 to 10 miles out. Striped marlin action slowed a bit. (Earlier in the year we got to expect multiple fish on every boat.) At the moment one can expect one fish per boat. Also sailfish are biting in the same numbers.Yellowfin Tuna – Most of the action is south. There are still fish inshore near Vinorama, south of Frailes. Quite a mixture of sizes. Some boats worked that bite and then ventured out from there and found porpoise. Good fish, with 88 pounds being the biggest … most of them were in the 40-pound range. Rapalas worked well. Hootchies trolled close worked well also and of course a few were taken with kites.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OC9MF1m7RG8/U8v7gkduDSI/AAAAAAAAXY8/REYintnL600/w600-h402-no/07.20.14dorado.jpg]Dorado – Well, as usual we caught some good-sized fish before the tournament but not so many in the tournament!!! Just to say the word 'Tournament" to stop a good bite!!! I am not sure of the tournament stats yet but I am sure they will tell the story and should go out today on the media. One of our pangas boated a 48-pounder the day before the tournament.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8ErS4l7NnJw/U8v70H0JShI/AAAAAAAAXZk/qms34MFqLuE/w600-h450-no/07.20.14rooster.jpg]Roosterfish – Fish continue to be of good size. The beach was a little tougher this week but the pangas continued to get fish over 50 pounds all week.Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch … The weekend brought the 'Dorado Shootout" which essentially pushed 140 boats after dorado only, thereby skewing the stats a little. However, our boats which were not in the tournament did get some good tuna![Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-oO_vJiSY4QM/U8v7EdwvvLI/AAAAAAAAXYM/-Krh-o5igIU/w866-h606-no/07.20.14amberjack.jpg]Those that worked the bottom did well with barred pargo and amberjacks. Jigging Butterfly Jigs off the bottom produced the best results.

Rancho Leonero Resort, East Cape BCS, MexicoA report right from the source: The week of July 6 - July 13, 2014The Environment:Clean, clear water. Afternoon winds from the East.Water – 83-84 degrees inside, 86-88 degrees outside.Air – Pleasant and cooler this past week; very tropical, with some overcast rainy afternoons. Highs in the low 90s.The Bottom Line:Good news on the bait! Finally we are getting some nice sardina! This will definitely help the tuna fishing. With improving weather, the bite is turning back; call it a 7 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.Billfish – The billfishing was better this week … a consistent blue marlin bite is helping with one or two being released daily by the fleet. The fishing has improved this week for stripers and sails as well. Yellowfin Tuna – Mostly 10- to 20-pound fish this past week. There are two areas producing tuna … inside within two miles of the beach between Frailes and Vinorama and outside from 10 to 20 miles out under the porpoise.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OCHWdkI67D8/U8KkvN__SaI/AAAAAAAAXFA/mDBuDeGmFfc/w450-h600-no/07.13.14.dorado.jpg]Dorado – The dorado were mostly schoolies. These smaller fish are harder to hook up with caballito and ballyhoo, but the sardina were the way to go.[Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8sf8U86YyPU/U8Kk_vlJbfI/AAAAAAAAXFo/rLPbbz6sRsw/w723-h600-no/o7.13.14.rooster.jpg]Roosterfish – The gallo fishing is good with some big fish this week! Rincon Bay in about 50 feet of water has been producing the biggest fish. A couple released this week were very close to 100 pounds.Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch … The roosters are huge and the yellowfin bite has improved as the week progressed.

    The week of June 28-July 5, 2014

    The Environment:

A week of overcast, clouds and rain didn’t do much for the fishing, but it sure helped everything else down Baja way. By Saturday (7/5) the sun broke through and things were quickly swinging back to the normal July weather.

Water – Temps down a few degrees to high 70s and low 80s with a few hot spots a degree or two warmer.

Air – Highs in the 80s. Very little harsh direct sun.
    .
    The Bottom Line:

Bait remains excellent with our new Rancho crew really doing a good job. We’re getting good quality caballitos and ballyhoo. We are also beginning to get some sardina.

Even with the inclement weather, call it a 6 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

Billfish – Although there were fewer fish, we still had blues, stripes and sails all week. The best areas were again close – from Cabo Pulmo to La Ribera, just 5- to 10-miles out. Sailfish were hitting the caballitos, the stripers mostly on the ballyhoo while the blues were taken on lures.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mujzgFNvd_0/U7mFsE9f4ZI/AAAAAAAAWDc/dd-6WTyL0go/w455-h600-no/070614yft.jpg]
Yellowfin Tuna – The tuna were really hit and miss. There were schooled fish close inshore south of Los Frailes, but that’s quite a long boat ride. The fish were slow on the bite and mostly footballs to 20-pounds. The good news is that the sardina are available down there.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jn-eJHUKTTo/U7mF-gN9gAI/AAAAAAAAWEE/UNx4qFlUdyA/w450-h600-no/070614dorado.jpg]
Dorado – The dorado were mostly schoolies. These smaller fish are harder to hook up with caballitos and ballyhoo, but the sardina were the way to go.

Roosterfish – While rooster fishing was a little quieter on the boats, it was good from the beach with a number of anglers taking good fish on poppers and waxwings.

Wahoo – With better weather, these buzz saws began to pop on Sat. There were a number of ’hoo taken … all on Rapalas. Best area was around Punta Colorado.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-t-bCCkBIhZg/U7mGQuY6psI/AAAAAAAAWEs/kRM0LA5ctJY/w450-h600-no/070614pargo.jpg]
Bottom fishing remained good-to-excellent with huachinango (the bright red snapper), barred pargo and amberjacks leading the way.

The week of June 21-28, 2014

    The Environment:

Water – Temps constant 81-85-degrees with a few hot spots a degree or two warmer. Clear, flat calm mornings.

Air – Highs in the 90s. Afternoon winds are cooling and pleasant.

    The Bottom Line:

The big news of the week is the blue marlin bite, highlighted by a 730-pound fish taken locally. Our Rancho skippers have released fish every day this week in the 200- to 300-pound class.
We have a new bait crew at the resort and are getting excellent bait including good quality caballito and barracudas as well as the ballyhoo which continue to light up the marlin and sailfish. There were the first sardines this week … very small ones.

All-in-all: Call it a 9+ on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

Marlin+ – The hottest bite is real close, right off La Ribera … a mix of blues, stripers and sails. Sailfish are everywhere and very aggressive on the lures. Dropping a live caballito back into the pattern has proved the most successful. The blues have been hitting lures mostly, but also love the ballyhoo. The striped marlin bite has been solid all year and continues as strong as ever with lots and lots of them. All boats targeting billfish are scoring at least one; most boats multiples.

Yellowfin Tuna – Tuna are a long ride out. There are schools of porpoise way to the north and way to the south, which means they are moving around quite fast. There have been huge fish mixed in with smaller footballs, but it has yet to become what we call "WFO."
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wJXS-7gzobw/U7BQ_R_wwfI/AAAAAAAAUiE/lap7-Wox_sQ/w455-h607-no/dorado06.29.14.jpg]
Dorado – Dorado are around in numbers. The best bite has also been close – mostly La Ribera and the Lighthouse. Biggest this week was 40-pounds with lots of smaller fish in the 15- to 20-pound range.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Rx_ygmVJ6h0/U7BQnDRjmeI/AAAAAAAAUhc/GqJQorvUhGw/w451-h605-no/rooster06.29.14.jpg]
Roosterfish – The gallo bite has also lasted right through the month. Rancho boats are still seeing plenty of 50- to 70-pound fish that definitely put a bend in your rod. We have become spoiled this year and consider a 50-pounder quite ordinary. Slow trolling caballitos has been the best.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …

The week of June 14-21, 2014

    The Environment:

Water – Temps are up to 81-85-degrees. Afternoon easterly breezes.

    Clear, flat calm mornings.

Air – Highs in the 90s. Afternoon winds are cooling and pleasant.

    The Bottom Line:
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wuoYlaCvSXM/U6XSuneRlMI/AAAAAAAAUKk/nQfXSqNYm2M/w495-h659-no/blue.jpg]
Blue marlin showed in surprisingly large numbers. At least 10 blues were released by the hotel fleet in the past four days. Yellowfin tuna have been in and out all week with some quality fish in the 100-pound range taken outside under the porpoise. The big gallos or roosterfish are still biting aggressively with very light fishing pressure. Striped marlin are abundant and very close to the hotel.

The dorado fishing has been OK if not spectacular this week as well. Lots of big amberjack and pargo were taken off the bottom. The water is much warmer than normal … at least a month ahead of schedule making for some spectacular fishing.

All-in-all: Call it a 9 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

Marlin – The most blues released over the past week that Leonero captains can recall in years. At least 10 were brought to hand; none over 300-pounds. All of them were taken off the inside banks.

Lots and lots of striped marlin. All boats targeting billfish are scoring at least one; most boats multiples. Almost all the stripers were taken on trolled ballyhoo within sight of the Ranch.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AvGyEARPHdw/U6cWmVqVYEI/AAAAAAAAUTk/lrEb6InzIUE/w495-h659-no/tuna06%252C22.14.jpg]
Yellowfin Tuna – Spread out all over the place; bigger ones outside under schools of porpoise. Three fish over 100-pounds! And it’s getting better every week.

Dorado – The Golden Ones are getting bigger. From the ones we’re nailing on trolled ballyhoo it appears they’re gaining five pounds a week or more.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-cgWJc84Jia4/U6cV6WRHu5I/AAAAAAAAUS0/LyB2rZgGucY/w721-h586-no/rooster06.22.14.jpg]
Roosterfish – If you’ve never caught one, now is the time. Pressure is light as most anglers are looking for tuna and marlin.

Very good pompano, pargo and amberjack fishing continues.

    Anglers of the week
Will Huston, Jack and Gary Jenison, Long Beach Ca with 2 blues released, 2 striped marlin released, 1 sailfish released in one day fishing aboard Luna Sea.

The week of June 1 - June 8

Water – 79 to 82 degrees. Water is warm, flat, and clear.

Air – Warm…highs in the mid-90s with cooling easterly afternoon winds.

    The Environment:

It's nearly summer time and the fishing is easy for our anglers as the sea and air temps continue to climb. However, an easterly breeze each afternoon helps cool things down.

    The Bottom Line:

We slipped down to a 7 on our 1 - 10 scale as the dorado slowed slightly.

Marlin – Two or three releases per day have been common. Off the ledge from La Ribera to the Lighthouse taking ballyhoo with trolled lures and live caballito. Jumpers and tailers are providing a visual show almost everywhere!
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-479CSPlkb9U/U5S0B8vE9gI/AAAAAAAATQg/Ueke0SNVFCc/w480-h640-no/Dorado06.08.jpg]
Dorado – Limits for all anglers early in the week, but the bite slowed Friday. Average fish weighed around 12 pounds with the largest weighing 47 pounds…bigger fish this week than last from 200 meters to 3 miles offshore, Punta Arena and south to the Pulmo Park boundary. All baits were working.

Roosterfish – All beaches have been productive. Larger Gallo's in the 50- to 60-pound class are being taken daily just south of the lighthouse in about 50 to 75 feet of water with the boats drift-fishing live caballito producing the best results.

Pargo. pompano, amberjack- Very good bottom fishing! Big pargo to 40 pounds, amberjack from 40 to 60 pounds, pompano in the 8- to-15 pound class. Anglers opting to work the bottom are scoring well.

The week of May 25-June 1 Water - Water temps are sliding onward and upward to a consistent 80 degrees. Air - We had a few overcast days Which Took the sting out of the sun, but When it cleared, it what into the mid-90s. The Environment: The official start of summer is June 21, about three weeks away. But do not tell the fish that. They are on the feed like it's an American Legion BBQ on July 4th. We continue to get good bait - (caballitos and ballyhoo), but no sardines yet. The Bottom Line: Our first 10 of 2014 on the 1 to 10 scale. Marlin - The striped marlin bite Continues. Anglers can expect multiple hookups every day. Lures, caballitos and ballyhoo are all working. The fish are mostly within 10 miles of shore all over the East - Another good week for dorado. Again, the fish are spread. Good areas were from Los Frailes and south; So right out from Leonero. Biggest fish this week what 56 pounds taken by Ken Ross. The fish are feeding aggressively and are growing fast. It's a very good time for trophy dorado did! Tuna - Rancho Leonero is Officially Tuna Town! On Thursday, one boat bagged eight fish, all 15 to 20 pounds. If you outside range about 20 miles you will run into many different schools of porpoise - some are holding tuna, others not. Some porpoise schools have been holding big tuna. Boats have found 100 pounders way up north near the 88th All the fish on Thursday hit blue and white hoochies. roosterfish - Another monster week for roosters. Huge fish are around for anybody who puts in the effort. The Marina entrance as well as Rincon Bay produced good fish. We've been seeing and there are reports of big fish cruising the beach all over. Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch bottom fishing off La Ribera HAS BEEN wonderful. There are huge pargo in the 40-pound class as well as amber jacks. Best bet HAS BEEN steel jigging off the bottom.

The week of May 18-25 ! Water - Water temps have crept up to about 80 Yes Air - Balmy days and pleasant evenings. Highs in the high 80s and low 90s. The Environment: Like they say on the TV quiz shows, "Come On Down!" We've got good flat seas with quality caballitos and ballyhoo for bait. The Bottom Line: A solid Leonero 9 on a 1 to 10 - Excellent. High boat what the NO DOUBT with Captain Hector at the helm and six marlin on one day. Perhaps the bigger news of the week what the arrival of the first big blue marlin. Angler Kevin Toohey released a 300 pounder on 5/24. Other news is the appearance of a few - Continues to be very good with the fish all over the East Cape waters. Fish are slightly bigger. We all know how nearly they grow so there are high hopes of a grand dorado season. . Biggest fish this week estimated to be a 40-pounder Tuna - They are starting to show with fish taken most days. Best bet what 25 miles straight out where our boat MOHO got into a school with fish slightly larger than football size. I am anticipating good tuna fishing soon with all the signs in place early this - Traditionally, this HAS BEEN an excellent time for boating a big Gallo and we were not disappointed. Best fish what about 50-pounds taken at Rincon. Other biggies were ambushed right in front of Buena Vista. Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch pargo are coming to gaff on the banks off La Ribera. Mixed in with synthesis were some good amberjack in the 50-pound class fish ... thatwill definitely put a bend in your rod and curl your hair. Iron working what best jigged at about 150 feet. The week of May 11-18

Water - Water temps have stabilized with inshore at 72 degrees; outside 80 degrees, flat and calm.

Air - Cool mornings, nice weather … highs in the low 90s. Last couple of days were beautiful and clear.

    The Environment:

As we say in Mexico, “Perfecto!”

    The Bottom Line:

    A solid Leonero 8 on a 1 to 10 scale.

Marlin – They are jumping into the boats! Very, very good billfishing. All boats targeting marlin are releasing at least one, most multiples. The fish are an easy 15 to 20 minutes from the "Ranch," directly in front of La Ribera.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-v-dcXelZQFQ/U3kWp1VDwDI/AAAAAAAAQwU/zUuLM4pcBuU/w480-h640-no/dorado05.18.14.jpg]
Dorado – Good fishing early in the week with all anglers limiting although the bite has slowed some in the past few days.

Roosterfish and more – Roosters have been on and off this week. The best gallo bite has been south, around Los Frailes. Fish in the 50-pound range are being released daily.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …

The first yellowfin tuna showed this week. On Friday, the JenWren ran into a school of tuna off Los Frailes. The boat limited with the largest fish a bruiser weighing 63-pounds.

Water - Water temps have stabilized with inshore at 77° degrees; outside 82° degrees.

Air - Warm days in the mid-80's and cool evenings.

    The Environment:
Another interesting week. Things started slowly but a couple of breezy days turned the water over and lit the fishing back up by the weekend.
Most of the boats were working to the south where there has been good warm water this week A few boats went north which was a mistake as there was not much going on up there.
    The Bottom Line:

    A solid Leonero 7 on a '1-10' scale!
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh6.googleusercontent.…w640-h462-no/sail0512.jpg]
Marlin – The striped marlin bite was again producing multiple fish for those staying with it. Again ballyhoo was the hot bait. Plenty of jumpers and tailers around, spread from the hotel to the south of Los Frailes.

Dorado – The dorado bite is back on after slow days on Monday and Tuesday; Scott Curry and his brother Randy from Newport limited every day they went out. Best dorado fishing was also to the south … around Rincon and Frailes.

Wahoo - Another bit of good news was that there were wahoo in the warm water south of Frailes. Biggest fish we had was 40 pounds.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.…0-h502-no/rooster0512.jpg]
Roosterfish and more – There have been fish about all month, but this week they really became feeders. This is good news for all the beach fly fishermen. Plus there was pargo as well as a few cabrilla on the reefs.

The week of April 26-May 3

    Water – 77- 82°
    Air – Low 90's

    The Environment:

An inconvenient swell -- most likely a weather front from up norte had inconvenient swells breaking right on the Rancho Leonero beach. This made for some tricky launching mid-week. It even prevented the bait boat from launching one morning. However, all was back to normal by the weekend.

    The Bottom Line:

    A 7.5 on a “1-10” scale!

Marlin– Praise be the striped marlin! The bite remains strong. These are good-sized fish and vigorous fighters. Most stripers are being hooked just 3 to 6 miles off the beach. Just like last week, rigged ballyhoo was the most successful. Live caballito are a good choice when pitched to tailing fish. Go get ‘em.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jO9mkeu_yus/U2e54vnALJI/AAAAAAAAQXg/00eutuBzIvU/w640-h527-no/05.05.14.dorado.jpg]
Dorado– Our early season dorado (or mahi-mahi) blitz continued. The bay past the Lighthouse (Rincon) is still producing the most fish. Rigged ballyhoo is the preferred bait. The fish were slightly bigger than last week, with the largest right around 30 pounds.

    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XEBBNzob1VE/U2e5kcBF2dI/AAAAAAAAQW4/Tr2X_4vxXyU/w640-h480-no/05.05.14.rooster.jpg]
Roosterfish and more–While fishing dorado in the Rincon area, most anglers gave the roosters a try. There are some really big gallo all along the beach. Best was right in front of the houses in the bay. Roosters were 50 pounds and over; all taken on the caballito.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch …
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zdLi0UBp3SI/U2e6M9TbnDI/AAAAAAAAQYI/H2l_TzlDab8/w619-h640-no/05.05.14.pompano.jpg]
Pompano – Significant action was right in front of Leonero with a memorable pompano bite. Best bet is drifting live caballito and trolling them very slowly. Mixed in with the pompano are some good-sized barred pargo as well as some dorado. Good news for any kayak angler: This is all within an easy paddle!

Water - 79-81 degrees; clear and flat all week.

Air - Highs in the mid-80s; cool mornings.

    The Environment:

Flat water, light breezes, clear skies and noisy reels followed by ceviche and margaritas.

    The Bottom Line:

    A solid Leonero 8+ on a “1-10” scale!

Marlin – Off the board! Striped marlin are loving the trolled Leonero-rigged ballyhoo off the La Ribera Bank, with three or four releases a day not unusual. These are all big fish … right around 200 pounds.
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.…o/w640-h480-no/dorado.jpg]
Dorado –The dorado were bigger and were found in greater numbers than the past couple of weeks. Most of our boats have been limiting, with the average fish around 12 pounds and some bulls pushing 40. The area around the Lighthouse has been by far the most productive with the fish biting very close to the beach on the Rincon side.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch …
    [Blockierte Grafik: https://lh5.googleusercontent.…_Lawrence+%25281%2529.jpg]
Steven and Nicholas Lawrence, Los Angeles each landed bucket list sized roosters this week when Dia del Niño, a Mexican holiday was being celebrated.
Roosterfish and more – Our big roosterfish have finally come to the party! Five days out of the past seven have produced pez gallo in the 50- to 70-pound class. These will put a bend in your rod and a curl in your hair to say nothing of brightening your disposition after a long winter.
Caballito and mullet are both working, with the Lighthouse area again producing the biggest fish.

Pompano – Not too many boats looking for them with marlin, dorado and roosters on everyone’s mind … but if you want to give them a try, stick around Scott Glen’s house.

Our fishing continued at a good pace after last week's abrupt turnaround. Billfish action was only a few miles from the hotel. Our guys found ’em north at Punta Pescadero around the first line of shark buoys and only two miles from shore. The trick was to catch some of the bonito that gathered beneath the buoys, then immediately slow troll them, which attracted everything including blue and striped marlin, sailfish and dorado.

Meanwhile, the tuna action that has been so good most of the summer has moved further down the coast to the Gordo Banks in front of San Jose del Cabo.

Inshore action with light pressure is producing excellent catches of both roosterfish and jacks.

Last Sunday, our friends from Animal Lovers of Mexico Association held their annual sportfishing tournament that produced nearly 20 billfish and more dorado for the 10 local boats that participated in the event. Money raised goes for abandoned pets throughout East Cape.

The message has been the same, as the North wind raged for the past five days ... slow! What a bummer! This after suffering through a ridiculously slow October that is finally coming to a close with ghosts, goblins and witches lurking in the final dark night.

However, the dorado have reappeared at the shark buoys, and it looks like there might be an early November marlin bite that could turn out to be memorable. Trick or treat tonight and be up early tomorrow to see if it will work on the water as well.

2011 Tuesday, October 25 Fish Tale – It’s been just over a month since my last “Fish Tale” and although I have been busy with construction projects at both houses and visiting friends from California and Alaska, I have managed to wet my lines nine times between Tales.
Today was beautiful; about 90 degrees on water as clear and dark blue as your imagination will take you. Lots of fishing this week, but not much catching. Tuna have been scarce and the marlin and sailfish have changed tactics.
Most of the catching resulted from going to known bait-holes, turning off the engines and soaking bait (fishing with live bait) on 100 to 200 feet of line. Now, if you thought trolling for 6 to 8 hours without a strike was boring!
The other 8 days of fishing we had conditions ranging from calm days like today to a day with 6 foot waves and wind. We did catch and/or release two Dorado, one tuna, four Striped Marlin, three Sailfish and a number of large Skipjack. One of the marlin was caught by the son of friends from Alaska and it was his first!
We were out-smarted by at least one Wahoo, six sailfish, two striped marlin and a blue marlin.

The tournaments are over for the year and the temperatures are cooling off at night. The winds are starting to change and come from the North, so I know the end of the fishing season is not far off. I won’t be fishing as much, but will keep you updated of my adventures as they come along.
Attached are a couple pictures including the new arbor added to Casa Beerman for more shade during the summer.
    Life is Good!

    October 10, 2011

Recent billfish fishing included striped marlin in addition to a few blues and sails which provided the most consistent action. Unfortunately, there were many more bites than releases as most came unbuttoned before the leader was near enough to touch to make it official.

With the fish moving inside the 20-mile mark, it was a quick run to find them and get the party started. While the sails seemed to be on the large side, the stripes were average and blues barely hitting the 200 mark.

Tuna action fell off not because they were gone. Plenty were spotted feeding with the porpoise, but were not interested in lures or live bait.

While the dorado action seem a bit on the ho-hum side, our fleet still caught nearly 10 times more of them than tuna … go figure.

Inshore action was great for Captain Victor on Mosca 1. Most of the roosters landed were in the 30-pound class plus a slug of jacks working close to the beach allowed guests to post release number in double digits for the week.
    The numbers: (R indicates Released)

    2 Blue Marlin 1R
    10 Striped Marlin 8 R
    11 Sailfish 10R
    29 Dorado
    3 Tuna
    30 Snapper
    3 Wahoo
    6 Cabrilla
    16 Roosterfish all released.
    16 Jack Crevalle all released

We hosted Mark Davis from Penn Big Water Adventures fishing with his buddies from Mustad Hooks; plus Jeff Pierce and Nick Honachefsky from Saltwater Sportsman, researching an article for the magazine.

Emilio Valdez with his first striped marlin at 5 years old.

Sorry I didn’t write last week, I was on vacation! But everything remained the same without me, just check the numbers of fish. We actually had a number of fisherman during my absence.

Not bad right? The tuna continued to be in the 20 to 50 lbs range, however when the wind blew for a few days it was difficult to locate the porpoise. Billfish action took up the slack when the tuna action slowed for the anglers. Dorado action was sporadic with the fish only found on a couple of days last week, nothing consistent, just two decent days.

This week we had a large group of 30 people from Tamaulipas. Fishing on eight boats they racked up: 1 blue marlin, 6 striped marlin, 10 sailfish, 1 wahoo and 3 dorado. For most of them it was their first time catching billfish (blue, striped and sailfish) and of course first wahoo. We have some pictures of this group from their awards dinner, not from the fish unfortunately.

Bait continues to be plentiful, sardina, mackerel, jacks, ballyhoo, and mullet.

It was a hot week, but is changing already for the following days. Let's see how it goes this week.

    Totals:

    (R indicates Released)

    2 Blue Marlin
    17 Striped Marlin 11R
    20 Sailfish 18 R
    26 Dorado
    54 Tuna
    2 Wahoo
    1 Amberjack
    4 Roosterfish 4R

How do we characterize the tuna bite?

Start with Hot, Hotter and Hottest. Then go from there with bent rods, aching backs, sore muscles and plates of sashimi during cocktail hour.

While the tuna action continues for quality fish in the 30- to 50-pound range, our other species continue to play catch-up with dorado leading the pack.

The perennial favorite, roosterfish, was not targeted by any of our anglers this week because of the excellent yellowfin tuna bite.

With the warm water, sailfish releases led the way in the billfish category with only one blue marlin caught

We had a total of 20 charters with the following numbers:

    (R indicates Released)
    1 Blue Marlin
    4 Sailfish 4R
    5 Dorado
    72 Tuna
    1 Cabrilla
    5 Amberjack
    1 Pompano

2011 Thursday September 15 Fish Tale – My quest continues for a world record length fish. In my last ‘Tale’, I had two records and had completed all the applications, written the checks and was ready for the mail. Then I got the update from IGFA. Both had already been broken. Good news is, I was able to retrieve and VOID the checks and buy another keg of beer!

More good news: I went out today and caught another record. This time a jack or almaco. The current record is 80 cm, mine was 81. Bad news – you have to exceed the existing record by 2 cm to replace it in the record books. Next week.

Today starts the big Mexican holiday weekend, Independence Day. I can celebrate two Fourths of July each year.

    Life is Good!

We did something this week that was someplace between “special” and “amazing.” We had a group from San Diego that came over to celebrate a birthday and hold a bachelor party. Besides being fishermen, these guys were surfers. On their first day, they requested two boats for a surfing\fishing trip. We took them to shipwrecks, La Fortuna and sand castles to surf; these are areas beyond Los Frailes, about 30 miles south. They said that the waves were unbelievable and it was one of the best surfing trips they had ever experienced.

On their way back to the hotel they completed the doubleheader by catching dorado and tuna. There were eight anglers, four on each boat.

In regards the fishing, all the action was concentrated on tuna, which is currently a wide-open bite. In the words of one angler, “They are everywhere.” Most sailfish have been found near the porpoise. There were a few dorado, which has been the case for several weeks.

    Numbers for this week:
    (R Indicates Released)
    1 Blue Marlin R
    14 Sailfish 14R
    24 Dorado
    103 Tuna
    2 Snapper
    1 Shark R
    1 Pompano
    2 Roosterfish 2R

Fish Tale –Today was it was a World Record day. Three times. But I will have to see what officially stands after I apply to the IGFA for certification.

This year, the IGFA started a new program for World Records called “Length.” It’s catch and release using an eight inch wide tape measure purchased from the IGFA. Since this is the first year of the program, and there is such an abundance of the species of eligible fish, I thought “Why not?” I may get my name in the World Record book at least for a short period of time.
So, today was my first day to try for records. I grabbed the measure, packed a couple light line rods, picked out some bottom jigs and then loaded up on a whole lot of sardines.

After discussing the day’s strategy with my boat captain Juan, we began to target different places where I knew there would be a variety of the eligible fish. The program identifies fish that are hardy and easily handled for measurement. Yeh, right … not!

I identified about a dozen species of the 65-plus that are eligible. We made passes over seven fishing holes and ended up with three fish that should be World Records: A Red Snapper, Black Skipjack and a Ladyfish.

The rules are fairly simple: Catch the fish, lay it on the measure, take pictures and release it so it will swim away. When measuring, the mouth of the fish is to be closed. HA! Good luck on that one. But, even better, try and get a live fish to hold still for five or more pictures. These fish are not interested in their 15 minutes. All they want to do is get back into their watery environment.
The first fish I caught was the Black Skipjack and in all the excitement of the first catch, I forgot to take a picture of me holding the fish (which is required). Duh!
We’ll just have to see what happens with the other two.

    Life is good.

As a result of Hurricane Greg that passed to the west far below the Baja peninsula, we had some much needed rain followed by stronger than normal winds.

The weather improved in just a nick of time for the arrival of Paco Marroquin, host of the popular Mexican TV show "Vamonos de Pesca."
    http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net…268_1025820_1577937_n.jpg
We were greeted with excellent inshore fishing for roosterfish in the 40-pound class as well as a yellowfin tuna bite near the lighthouse that produced fish from 15 - 40 pounds.

Later, we headed offshore for billfish and found a few sailfish eager to be stars in the show. Needless to say, Paco and I were delighted with the results and it should be an entertaining show to watch.

Also received a note from Erik von Heideken, Metolius Climbing, from Bend, OR who visited the resort with his family earlier this summer to fly fish.

"I am enclosing a few pictures from my fly fishing with young Victor aboard
the Mosca. My family and I had a great time. The pool was great, as was the food,
the grounds keeping and the entertainment."
Victor is a great captain. Please give my regards to him and I hope to return again next year.

The first half of August has been a busy time here at the hotel. The staff barely had time to catch their breath after the record-breaking 12th edition of the Bisbee's East Cape Offshore Tournament before well known TV host Dan Hernandez with an entourage of 45 anglers arrived from all over the country to film a segment of his popular Dan Hernandez Sportfishing show.

According to Hernandez, fishing was awesome! He landed six marlin and two sailfish the first two days, and 20+ dorado, 15 roosterfish and one nice tuna plus plenty of smaller fish the other days of their filming.

He declared that his recent trip was one of his best ever; the dorado were so thick that they stuck the underwater camera down in the corner and hand-fed the dodo's ... the roosterfish were the same way. One of the anglers in his group landed a blue marlin over 300 pounds and others landed several wahoo. The marlin were very close to shore. All of his were taken less than two miles off the beach and right in front of the resorts!

"It was a great trip," Dan concluded, "plus there is plenty of live bait."

It's about as good as it gets right now.....most of the fish he caught were on live bait, mackerel and jacks for the billfish and sardines for tuna; when the dorado school was up, he also landed several on his special 'B-52 bucktails'. By the way, the roosters loved the larger live jacks.

He also commented in his blog about the lack of anglers visiting the area ... reflecting on whether it's just that people are afraid to spend money or whether it's all the bad press that Mexico has received recently. He went on to say that he knew that anytime anything bad happens in Mexico it makes the news, but over that weekend a hundred thousand plus people made it home safely from Mexico (including his group of 45) and that wasn't newsworthy! He further commented that he and his group felt very safe while he was at Hotel Buena Vista and the entire time he was in Baja!

Last weekend was 'La Ribera Days' at East Cape ... each city in Mexico has its own 'day'. And, depending on size of the city, the fiesta held usually on the weekend, is comparable in size. 'La Ribera Day' started Friday night and ended on Monday night. The biggest attractions were the Ferris wheels, bumper cars and games for the kids, plus the horse races, chicken fights, a carnival, nightly dancing and a fishing tournament for everyone.

It’s a festive affair with many drink and food booths and of course a stage for speeches by local dignitaries, a queen of the city crowned and the prizes for the tournament awarded…and the music of the many local bands which filled the area with their performances.

A total of 38 teams paid the 2,000 pesos to compete in the fishing tournament. First prize was awarded to Victor Sandez for his 353-pound blue marlin earning him $96,000 pesos.

In the tuna division our own Esaul Valdez on the Dottie B11 landed a 56-pound tuna, enough to capture the 13,000 peso top prize in that division.

On another of our boats, Liliana's angler Antonio Talamantes scored another 16,000 pesos for his 48-pound dorado.

Needless to say "Happy Hour" in our El Pescador Bar was even happier Sunday afternoon!

Here are the numbers for last week. (R indicates Released)

    23 Tuna
    38 Snapper
    5 Amberjack
    1 Pompano
    1 Cabrilla
    22 Roosterfish 22R

As soon as the Bisbee was completed, the fishing seemed to improve with some better-sized tuna along with more dorado mainly down to the south. Most of the blues being caught remain smaller with 300 pounds being the upper limit of those being released. Still decent numbers of stripers and sails if you put your time in on the grounds.

Most of our clients preferred to target the dorado and tuna offshore. Inshore action was a mixed bag of jacks, roosterfish along with a few pompano and smaller dorado and tuna close to shore.

The number of blue marlin being caught and released has continued to climb and hopefully will be full speed for the East Cape Offshore Tournament, Tues., July 26 to Sat., July 30 (3 fishing days).
As our catch numbers reflect, the wide open tuna bite fizzled for most while dorado catches increased.

We also had some bonus wahoo for a nice summer surprise. Inshore, the roosterfish plus amberjack, jack crevalle and snapper provided the best action all week.
Numbers fish caught and released (R):
    8 Blue Marlin 6R
    14 Striped Marlin 12R
    9 Sailfish 9R
    42 Dorado
    14 Tuna
    4 Wahoo
    28 Roosterfish 28R
    14 Jack crevalle
    6 Amberjack
    19 Red Snapper
