Interesting topic (If you ignore the sheer cost of the luxury of an own boat) IT REMAINS FAR CHEAPER TO LET SOMEONE ELSE OWN THE BOAT AND YOU CHARTER WHEN AND WHRE YOU WANT, but then the sweet sound of "my boat" knocks common sense out the window!

If you guys would allow me to add my tuppence worth, Pargo Man's comments about the South African Ski-boats are very true, but bear in mind that the whole reason for the concept is the lack of marinas, harbours and coastal storage facilities - you HAVE to be able to tow your boat and then live with the size that this dictates.

Invariably it also dictates that you have to settle with outboards and that opens another can of worms......(the old debate of which raise more fish)

Up in Richards Bay there has been a distinct change over the last few years and the population of bigger boats is steadily growing. There is simply no cheap, small substitute for a classic deep V style game boat in the 30 to 40ft size range. Anything less than that you simply become too weather dependent.

The cost (see an earlier post of mine regarding the detailed cost of owning such a vessel) and minimum crew requirement of such a vessel almost force one to offer charters and you end up being a "taxi driver" for others. Big or small boat, to fish succesfully for Marlin I believe that 3 anglers who all know what they are doing on deck, is the absolute minimum, with four being ideal on this size boat.

As for myself, I may be relocating to Cape Verde or Madeira and have no problem making a decision, if my trusty 34ft Black Watch, now with new clears, hard top and re-upholstered during the winter is not sold by then for her correct value, she certainly will go with despite the fact that the move may well cost about 20kUSD

    Hi Guys,

I have read this thread with great interest (unfortunately do not understand the German) but thought it necessary to post a reply based on facts and not emotion.

In South Africa we have a relatively short fishing season (even shorter for marlin) and our sometimes rough sea conditions, severely limit the number of fishing days for a charter boat and in Richards Bay I make it no more than 100 days per year. based on that, I have calculated the minimum charter fee as below.
CHARTER COST ANALYSIS BASED ON VAT CLAIMED BACK
    FACTORY TOTAL FOB R 2,221,519.74
    shipping R 190,000.00
Duty on FOB Cost R 191,277.95
    R 2,602,797.69

    Vat R 364,391.68
Total retail replacement cost R 2,967,189.37

CAPITAL INVESTED IN BOAT R 2,602,797.69
    DIITO IN TACKLE
    4 X 50'S R 24,000.00
    4 X 80'S R 32,000.00
    4 X 130'S R 40,000.00
    HARNESS R 5,000.00
    ASSORTED LURES R 10,000.00
    TOTAL CAPITAL INVESTED R 2,713,797.69
    MONTHLY INTEREST R 27,137.98
    MONTHLY MOORING R 950.00
    MONTHLY INSURANCE R 3,392.25
    MONTHLY DEPRECIATION R 8,559.30
    ANNUAL HAULING AND ANTI- FOUL/MONTH R 833.33
    ANNUAL SURVEY AND LIC/MONTH R 1,800.00
    ANNUAL LIFERAFT SERVICE/MONTH R 100.00
    MONTHLY FIXED COST R 42,772.86
MONTHLY FIXED COST ANNUALIZED R 513,274.32
FISHING DAYS PER SEASON FROM Sept to May
    SEPT 6

    NOV 10
    DEC 15
    JAN 15
    FEB 15
    MAR 10
    APR 10
    MAY 9 98
    DAILY FIXED COST R 5,237.49
    DAILY FUEL R 1,200.00
DAILY PORTION OF OIL AND SERVICING R 60.00
    DECKHAND R 300.00
    SKIPPER R 600.00
    CLEANER R 100.00
    CLEANING MATERIAL R 12.24
    TACKLE REPLACEMENT R 61.22
MINIMUM DAILY CHARGE TO BREAK EVEN R 7,570.96
    CONVERTED TO EURO € 1,014.87
    CONVERTED TO USD $1,196.04
    CONVERTED TO AUD $1,580.58

Despite the above calculations, I charge only 1000USD per day for a group of up to 4 passengers which I believe is relatively cheap to pay for a boat and crew with a very good track record.

In a nutshell - regardless of the pain threshold - if you want to charter a modern, fast and safe boat with good tackle and a good lure selection, you are going to have to pay! Even at 1000 Euro or 1200USD per day, (excluding the 14% Value added tax), the boat owner would barely cover costs, as no allowance for repairs have been made in the above calculation.

It would be very interesting to see similar calculations from charter skippers elsewhere in the world posted here.

I know for a fact that in Australia the going rate for a decent boat such as a 36ft Blackwatch is around 3500AUD/day

Bottom line is chartering a boat instead of owning one, is still a cheap solution to go fishing wherever your fancy takes you
