    Hi Sebastian.

I would not recommend June and July. The weather is rough and it would not be the ideal conditions for either casting or trolling. light jigging inside the atolls would be possible. Also, the boats would not be the most stable platform for anything else pretty much.

    Cheers

    Hey Carsten,

Thanks very much. Its been very hectic for me for the past few months and my son was born a month ago :) Thats the reason I have been away from these forums for a while.

How is the planned trip to Maldives shaping up for you? Unfortunately Nooraanee2 is not available for the period requested.

    Cheers
    Ahmed

The group is on the way back now, about 5 hours away from Male for the night.. I gave a call to the Captain and he says overall trip is good except for the foul weather at the beginning.. It is dead calm and beautiful for this week

    Cheers

Weather here in Maldives is finally 'reasonable'... hope the guys on Kandi Hibaru has done well. Will see if I can get a hold of their captain tomorrow and see how the weather is and how they are pushing along :)

    Cheers

Hi Thomas, All the best with the trip and hope you have a great time.
I am back in Maldives now and have been very busy with work and Nooraanee2 as well. Our trips up north have been very successful so far, especially jigging. Which direction are you taking?

Would be great to meet up for a coffee or sumthing if you have the time while you are here.
    Cheers,
    Ahmed

    Hallo Chris,

Maldives coast guard pretty regularly and with the help of fisherman gets illegal fisherman in our waters. What we do is, they are fined for illegally entering our country, and have their vessels and everything confiscated, fined and then deported. The fine depends on how much fish they have pilfered as well as the potential to steal, a function of the boat size usually. The boats are then sold in an auction to the local market.

About the rubbish problem, we hope something gets done, and as people get more and more aware of the damage we're doing there will be a change. the important thing is I hope it's not too late before we all realize that.

    Hi Tortugaf,

I am not in any way supporting taking sails for eating, but then lets give the benefit of the doubt here and say tastes are different for people to people. We Maldivians love fish and there's no denying that. Tuna, Reef fish, hunters and predators like barracudas and sails and marlins are excellent tasting fish for us Maldivians.

The next point is variety. We have to import every single piece of meat from thousands of miles away, frozen. It doesnt come cheap, with a Kg of good beef costing upwards of USD 15 in Male'. When such a fish comes along, and if the captain has his doubts of its survival when released, what do you expect him to do? Feed the sharks or feed his family with a bit more variety? We consider Skipjack Tuna, Bonitos, Yellowfin tuna, reef fishes, sails and marlins, all of them seperately and the difference between bonito and sailfish is the same as the difference between bonito and beef steak. My point is, even with these limitations, we do not specifically target these magnificent creatures. I am a Maldivian, but I have spent 2 years in Malaysia, 2.5 years in Australia and now a year in Sweden, so my view is from understanding the true limitations of my little country.

Lets just congratulate Henrik and his team on another well taken trip to the Maldives and let it be that? :)
    cheers and tight lines

    Hello Henrik,

You all are always welcome onboard Nooraanee2. At the moment, it looks like a very busy time ahead for me, already November and December is full and I just have 2 weeks in January, 2 weeks in February, 1 week in March and 3 weeks in April available.

About the sails, we Maldivians do eat sailfish and Marlins but only when we have them. We do not target sails and marlins at all, and the number of sailfish strikes game anglers have had in Maldives over the years have remained pretty constant as well.

    cheers and tight lines,

    Hi Oli,

Make sure you get a bbq for your next trip :) its fun and tastes excellent. I know that it cannot be arranged every day, but once a week it should be easy enough.Take the afternoon off to do some snorkeling and shore casting while the crew prepares for bbq and just after nightfall, it would be ready. To really enjoy it, the weather should be fine, its no fun running around with a plate of barbecued fish and potatoes trying to find shelter from the rain in an uninhabited island :D
The past 10 trips we had, I think 5 groups got barbecues, but the others were a bit too busy with their fishing to stop and enjoy. If you take the wives with you, then it becomes absolutely necessary I think. The 5 groups that did get a bbq had atleast 1 wife or girlfriend. And the number of fishing pictures increase as well. The catch report I posted here, I think they had over a thousand photos by the end of the trip. Just something to think about ;)

Hi Oli & Thomas and everyone else,

My point is, Big game fishing in Maldives is not just fishing, its an experience. You get to troll in the morning, jig right after lunch, snorkel in the afternoon, visit a village in the late afternoon, have a barbeque on the beach in the evening and still get to do some bottom fishing at night before you go to sleep in an airconditioned cabin. I am absolutely certain that there is no other place in the world you can come and do all that, and if there is, please let me know.

Of the rates mentioned, Nooraanee2 is USD 1050 per day for 6 pax, inclusive of meals and use of facilities. For outer atolls, we charge an extra USD 100 per day. I am not sure about the rates for others though.

@Jürgen, Nooraanee2 is 75 foot, and the displacement of about 65 tons. 75 foot displacement means a natural hull speed of 11.6 knots (1.34 x squareroot(75)). To achieve this hull speed, you need 2 kw per ton of displacement, or 2.66 hp per tonne, so Nooraanee2 would need 130 kw or 177 hp to travel at 11.6 knots. An internal combustion engine giving this power would consume approximately 40 litres per hour. The brilliant part of this is, Maldivian hulls are not fully displacement hulls and I would rather call it semi-semi-displacement hulls, and the fuel consumption is infact slightly lower than the calculations. Every single hull is unique, hand-built and results would vary a little from hull to hull. What I know is Nooraanee2 consumes 35 litres travelling at 11-12 knots. Maldivians have been seafarers for a very long time, and these shapes are tried and tested for maldivian waters.

High speed travel is very bumpy, travelling at over 20 knots would be very uncomfortable for anything over an hour. Granted that a Lagoon Powercat 43 is an excellent boat, but even then in the choppy open seas of maldives you would need back surgery after 2 weeks of trolling.

Regarding cockroaches, good boat design, good pesticides and good maintenance takes care of this. Its the excess moisture between deck and hull that gives an excellent habitat for them to breed, but it can surely be controlled and we never had a problem thankfully. Ants i never heard of before, but will be on the lookout definitely

    cheers

    Hi,

The towed dinghy doubles as a life raft in most cases. For trolling, it can be brought alongside the boat so the dinghy is not in the way. Putting it up on the sundeck is not a solution in most cases.

@ Jürgen, For rates you mention, Nooraanee2 charges around 850 euros, 6 individual cabins with air condition and double and single beds, attached bathrooms, watermaker, 24/7 electricity, 3 meals a day, tea and coffee, FUEL, 2 deepfreezers and a fridge, sea water pump+hose, GPS and fish finders, gaffs, onboard chef, dinghy etc. I dont see a big difference in facilities with the 1000 euro boats you mention, and admittedly the price is close as well. What you do get is late night jigging and relaxing under the stars with a cold beer in addition to that. What I want to highlight is, a 14 day fishing trip is overkill, relax a couple of afternoons, go snorkelling, get a suntan, visit some islands, do the whole Maldivian experience in your 14 days here. The tickets are not expensive especially if you know the right people. Condor flights direct to Maldives from Frankfurt is about 600 euros return if my info is correct.

My guess is a fishing trip to New Caledonia, Fiji, Ascension Islands etc would be at-least 1000 euro more per person based on 6 person group for 14 days including the flights, accommodation and meals. But please correct me if I am wrong.

The mistake is taking a 500 euro per day boat and expecting the quality and services of a 1000 euro boat, which will never happen. I am not defending any boat owner, and what happened to Oli should never happen and i hope it never happens again in Maldives.

    Ahmed

Hello everyone. We can either talk about it or get it started. I say lets get it started. All thanks to Uwe and his great idea, and I hope I can contribute well and thanks for the support.

General Information about Maldives and Fishing in Maldives
The Maldives is an island nation, a group of 26 coral atolls in the Indian Ocean. From north to south, Maldives spans slightly over 850km, and from east to west, a bit over 120km. It is situated on the equator and 73 degrees East. Local language is Dhivehi and English is widely spoken. The population is 330,000 and the religion is Islam. The economy is mainly based on tourism and fishing.
Maldives is perhaps the only country with its entire fishing industry regarded as dolphin friendly. Fishing is locally done with pole and line, as well as long line. Maldivians are not very active in big game fishing, and the traditional practices have remained for centuries. The Maldives has a conservation programme that anglers would need to be aware of as well. Spear fishing is banned as well as spear guns. Species that must not be killed include sharks, napoleon wrasse,…………. If in doubt, always ask the local agent or the captain.

    Information on Arrival
To get to Maldives: Scheduled flights operate to Male’ International Airport (MLE) at Hulhule’ Island. From Europe, Emirates, Qatar airways, Sri Lankan, British Airways, Oman Air and more operate scheduled flights. Many more charter flights operate to Maldives such as Condor, TUI, LTU, Monarch, Air Berlin, XL airways and many more.
Visa is given for 30 days on arrival. If you want to stay for more, it can be extended to 90 days so please get in touch with the local travel agent. Luggage is screened on arrival, alcohol, narcotics and pornography is forbidden and would be confiscated. Obviously for narcotics, you will be arrested. If customs find the slightest hint that there is something hidden, they will have the bags opened and will go through the contents so be prepared for that.
The local agent would be waiting for you just outside the arrivals gate, preferably with a piece of paper showing the organization name. Usually, anglers would be greeted easily as they are easily identified with all the rod tubes. Transfer to Male’ would be through the water taxi ferry or the local agent would hire a boat to take you to your liveaboard which would be your home for the duration of your stay. If the stay is in a resort, airport representatives for that resort would take over and arrange for the transfer.
ALWAYS buy travel insurance before you leave on a fishing trip.

Information on the necessary tackle, lures and types of fishing there
Trolling, Jigging, Popping/casting, deep fishing, traditional pole and line and long line
Fishing gear should be heavy because you have absolutely no idea what you would get and when. (I’ve seen a 30kg dog tooth tuna caught in an inner lagoon, depth about 20m, on jig just because they were bored right after lunch – Male’ Atoll)

    Boats and Prices

Fer boats are really equipped for big game fishing. Below are a few, there would be some more but please contribute the information as you know. An important thing to remember is, if a boat owner says that a certain major thing would be complete by next year - remember that there is always a big IF in that. Finance would always be an issue so think before believing. An example is, if a boat 'will' have airconditioning by next year, this is an expense of 60000 USD minimum including the generators is the boat does not have the capacity, and would be very unlikely to be finished. On the other hand, if the owner says that it would have a live bait well, thats a 100 dollar plastic barrel cut in half, and that would be very likely to be done.

Nooraanee2 – 6 cabins, airconditioned, attached bathroom, double and single beds, watermaker, 24/7 electricity, speed 9-13 knots, fish finders, rod holders, net gaffs, tail loop, hook gaffs, dinghy with 25hp outboard, ……………..

Mas Hibaru – 6 cabins, fans, attached bathroom, single beds, 24/7 electricity?, watermaker?, speed?, fish finder?, rod holders, dinghy with 15hp outboard, ……………..
Kandi Hibaru – 6 cabins, fans, attached bathroom, double and single beds, 24/7 electricity, watermaker?, speed?, fish finder?, rod holders, dinghy with 15 hp outboard, ………
Cozy (Pearlwin) – 4 cabins, fans, attached bathroom?, single beds, watermaker?, 24/7 electricity, 6-9 knots, fish finder?, rod holders, net gaff, tail loop?, dinghy with 15 hp outboard,……..

    Expected species

Trolling – Marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado, yellowfin tuna, skipjack tuna, bonito, rainbow runner,……..
Jigging – yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tuna, wahoo, GT, bluefin trevally, shark (unfortunately), groupers, snappers, amberjack, ……..
    Popping/casting – GT, groupers, snappers, Jacks, ……
Bottom fishing – GT, jacks, trevallys, groupers, snappers, sharks, eels, rays, ……

    Hi Black Runner and Sailfish,

In my experience, you dont need anything to haul in a GT less than 10 kg. If the crew is skilled enough, it can be swung in very easily. For 10-20 Kg, tail loop is useful and easy, but using the tail loop for GT larger than 20 kg breaks its tail (spine) very easily so you cannot release the fish. That's why for GT over 20 kg you need the landing net. We have landing nets and tail loops onboard Nooraanee2 for this reason. It is very useful when 2 fish has to be taken in at the same time.

Dinghy is a must so need it, but what we do for trolling is tie the dinghy alongside with rubber fenders between boat and dinghy. Putting it up on sundeck is not possible with our 14 foot dinghy with 25 hp engine.

    cheers and tight lines,
    Ahmed

    Hi Carsten,

Certainly possible, but our dates are filling fast. I have sent a pm because I do not want to hijack Oli's thread.
    cheers and tight lines,
    Ahmed

    Hey Oli,

The problem lies with your agents. Unfortunately most live aboard vessels do not specialize in fishing and most do not have an echo-sounder. Honestly, there's a handful of boats actually equipped for a 14 day fishing trip (by suitably equipped I mean enough capacity for fuel to last 14 days, watermaker, food, etc). Therefore the problem lies more with the persons that gave you this boat to give you a service that clearly cannot be fullfilled on it. Outwards it might all look the same, but in reality its the people and the hidden little details that matters the most.

    Ahmed

    Hi Oli,

First of all, I sympathise with you on how your trip turned out. It is things like this that makes a bad name for all Maldivians and makes me ashamed.
I would say the local agents should have handled the turn of events much better and the boat was not good enough for such a trip. What was the name of the boat? One and a half degree channel is not for novice captains and substandard boats.
Hopefully your next trip would be a better one.

    Ahmed

    Welcome back Oli,

Wheres the pictures and report? We had mixed results in the south as well but over the 16 days there were plenty of yellowfins and dog tooths between 6-15 kg range and few 25kg and over. There were some serious hookups lost after 10-20 mins fight because of line snapping (PE8) and we even managed to get one up to be able to see it, estimated at 50-70kg. Just not our day.
Jigging results with groupers, snappers and the likes were absolutely amazing. countless 10-20 kg specimens

    Waiting for pics and report.
    Ahmed

Good luck for the anglers and have a nice trip. Also, nice touch on the livefeed ;)

2 days without any bites? not good, but they must be in Lhaviyani atoll now?

    cheers,
    Ahmed

Hi, Thanks to Oli and Carsten, and Carsten, i'm understanding you just fine :)

Oli, if you have the time, try some deep jigging close to Fuvahmulah, the single island atoll between Gan and Huvadhoo atoll (0.18S, 73.25E) I heard that theres some pretty good unique deep sea fishes off there, never got a chance to do a trip though.

All the best and have fun on your trip.
    Regards,
    Ahmed

Hi Carsten, Just a quick question.

Why fly to Gan? I thought it would be more convenient to fly to Kaadehdhdhoo and then come to one and a half degree channel.

    Regards,
    Ahmed

    Hallo Carsten, eine kurze Frage.

Warum fliegen Gan?
