I talked with a lot of fisherman there. Some of them realy seems to fish with the so called "drift nets". I even have seen a lot of big trawlers(dont remember where they came from) that used to fish with "drift nets". It´s ridicolus to see what the european goverment is trying to do in case of protecting the enviorment....
It is common sense in especially the more southern parts of Italy to cheat all authorities.
In the sense of fishermen there are no laws and they dont accept any orders from Rome or Bruxelles

Perhaps it is just Italian vessels that are utilising those illegal drift nets BUT, given the very high prices achieved for Bluefin in International markets, there're a few more PIGS WITH THEIR SNOUTS IN THE TROUGH. (Sorry, a quaint old English expression but I'm sure its meaning is clear.)

suggests that tonneages close to 150% ABOVE current authorised quotas are being made and, of course, not declared. The view is that in most cases this is probably by legally registered vessels using permitted seine nets, those designed to ensnare whole shoals. Unfortunately the monitoring of catches being transferred to the sea cages, other than potential instances of corruption, is far from an exact science. And the view from ICAAT is that at least some of this operation has recently, in all probability, been conducted by EU registered vessels operating in spawning areas - when the fish aggregate tightly together - in Libyian waters.
