Jigging Canarias

    Hi xhicor,

thanks a lot for that fantastic movie. One question: Do you have any experience about Jigging on the Canaries? I heard a lot of very good stories (for example the HUUUGE AJ from Gran Canaria), but I can´t get any contacts who ca definitively give some advice about a good charter or area there.

    Best wishes,
    Uwe

Great video clip! That Spanish gentleman patently wasn’t prepared for what ended up on his line. Still at least his friends enjoyed it. And the skipper was astute enough to open up the throttle and chase the Marlin, a shame that the angler decided to tighten the drag still further.

I have found that there are a couple of anglers who post to the English forum on the caranx.net web site who can be most helpful but you’re right most of the deep water jigging is carried out by locals reluctant to reveal marks.

In terms of charter boat operators Jason Pipe who skippers Bocinegro - teambocinegro.com/ - out of La Gomera - a short ferry ride from Tenerife – whilst he specialises in Blue Marlin and Tuna fishing he does have all of the quality vertical jigging gear on board. And he enjoys fishing for the big Amberjack.

Also there's an operation on Gran Canaria - bluemarlin3.com/ - who arrange reasonably priced half-day jigging trips.

Next year I want to try jigging with Uwe on the Cabo Verde Island named Sal.

There are experienced italian fishermen there.

    We will see......

Well every success to you both. They certainly seem to get some good AJs, and prices are very reasonable.

One of the groups from our Club that fished Sao Vicente with Didier on Sabura in mid-May were desperately keen to try but I suppose with that run of Blues it was never going to happen. One of the guys though is going back for 10 days in August to target the Yellowfin, but also to try for the Amberjack, BIG Jack Crevalles and Tiger Sharks from Sao Nicholau.

Just started vertical jigging here. Going to the dry tortugas this week to give it a good shot.I've already caught small fish,(grouper, snapper, porgies). Going for the larger ones, I'll let you guys know how it ends up. 8)

    Hi Dave
Similarly looking forward to your report. I used to fish Key West a lot with guides out of Stock Island - Bob (RT) Trossett, Greg Sheretz, Willy Smith and the late Joe 'Green' (Alexander) - and we did a lot of light tackle jigging in the Gulf. Great fun, but they were always talking about the exceptional quality of fishing off the Dry Tortugas. Unfortunately with their small skiffs that meant hiring a mothercraft for the run down, and staying on on a multi day trip, and we just never got around to organising it. But ... one of these days!

    Wishing you every success!
